Good things can come out of the blue! Our secretary, Becky Robbins-Penniman, fields all the emails sent to our Club's address. Last July, the Vice President of the Lions Club of Cedar Park/Leander, Andrew Slaton-Freeman, emailed the Rotary Club of Cedar Park-Leander to explore whether the service clubs might collaborate.
With the enthusiastic support of Dee Thomas, the Club's president, Becky met Andrew for coffee. They had a delightful conversation and decided to meet again and invite leaders from the Kiwanis Club of Round Rock and the Round Rock Sertoma Club. They also asked some local community-oriented charities to join them, such as the Girl Scouts and Habitat for Humanity.
Meeting roughly monthly, the service club members shared the missions of their international organizations as well as their clubs' local efforts. They then discussed what they might do together to serve the community. From this was born the "Williamson County Service Clubs," or "WiSC", an informal coalition that hopes to "stir up service."
Their first joint event was a happy hour at 5th Element Brewing in Leander. About 40 folks from all the clubs attended, filling the small venue with warm introductions and lively conversations about common interests and shared passions. In addition to offering an opportunity to drink great beer, WiSC invited Habitat of Humanity of Williamson County to educate attendees about its projects and tell everyone about its "Hops for Houses" event in February.
WiSC plans to host a Happy Hour at breweries in their area every quarter; each event will feature a local not-for-profit organization. They are also exploring other ways to "stir up service" through collaboration, convinced that their clubs can do great things for their communities by working together.
